Speed of electroconvulsive therapy for depression: Effects of electrode placement

چکیده

Objective Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a rapidly effective treatment for severe depression. Treatment with right unilateral (RUL) or bitemporal (BT) ECT may explain individual differences in speed of effectiveness. There limited evidence demographic and clinical factors that predict response remission ECT. We aimed to investigate improvement as well achieving between twice-weekly brief-pulse high-dose (6 × seizure threshold) RUL moderate-dose (1.5 BT also explored characteristics remission. Methods Weekly 24-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale scores were assessed among patients depression who participated the EFFECT-Dep trial (ISRCTN23577151). Speed randomised (n = 69) was compared using independent sample t tests. Pearson's chi-square Fisher's exact tests proportions responders remitters at each weekly assessment. Predictors Cox regression analyses. Results no significant improvement, Exploratory analyses indicated not predicted by wide variety characteristics. Conclusion electrode placement did have predictive value when determining Other factors, such cognitive side-effects, be more relevant making choice

Effects of pulse width and electrode placement on the efficacy and cognitive effects of electroconvulsive therapy.

BACKGROUND While electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in major depression is effective, cognitive effects limit its use. Reducing the width of the electrical pulse and using the right unilateral electrode placement may decrease adverse cognitive effects, while preserving efficacy. METHODS In a double-masked study, we randomly assigned 90 depressed patients to right unilateral ECT at 6 times seizur...

Unilateral brief-pulse electroconvulsive therapy and cognition: effects of electrode placement, stimulus dosage and time.

To clarify advantages of unilateral electrode placement as an optimisation technique for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for depression, aims were to meta-analyse unilateral ECT effects on cognitive performance relative to: (1) bitemporal electrode placement, (2) electrical dosage, and (3) time interval between final treatment and cognitive reassessment. Relevant electronic databases were syste...

KATZ, R. J. Animal model of depression: Effects of electroconvulsive shock therapy. NEUROSCI. BIOBEHAV. REV. 5(2) 273-277, 1981.wWe have previously identified a potentially accurate and specific behavioral and neuroendocrine model of depression in the rat. The most effective somatic treatment for severe depressions is electroconvulsive shock therapy (ECT). ECT was investigated in the prexlinica...

Effects of clonidine on the hemodynamic changes of electroconvulsive therapy

Introduction: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective treatment for many psychological disorders, mainly major depression and schizophrenia which is often associated with some complications such as hypertension, tachycardia arrhythmia and even myocardial infarction. Various methods have been used for prevention or control of these cardiovascular side effects. The aim of this study was ...
